Wisconsin brewing owner who promised free beer in the event of Trump’s death launches bid for governor

Minocqua Brewing Company owner Kirk Bangstad announced his candidacy for Wisconsin governor on Sunday after offering free beer following the death of President Donald Trump.

“I’m running for governor because I believe Wisconsin needs a battle-scarred fighter to join the rest of America in saving our democracy from the Trump regime, and that person does not exist among the Democrats currently running in Wisconsin’s gubernatorial primary,” Bamstad wrote in a Substack post on Sunday.

More than a week ago, Bumstad’s brewery posted an ad for free beer in the wake of Trump’s death. Facebook’s comments followed news that a shooting occurred at a White House Correspondents’ Association dinner attended by Trump and several members of his cabinet.

Wisconsin Democratic bar laments ‘we almost got a free beer day’ over Trump assassination

“Well we almost got #freebeerday. Either the brothers and sisters in the resistance need to improve their marksmanship or he faked another assassination to get a positive news cycle,” the post said. “We’ll never know. Regardless, we’re always ready to pour a free beer the day it happens.”

The post led to Bumstad and his company being investigated by the FBI and Secret Service and denied by members of the Wisconsin Democratic Party, according to Bumstad.

“Message error [State Rep. Francesca] Hong Zao, and [gubernatorial candidate Mandela] Barnes and other corporate Democrats spilled progressive blood into the water, sparking a frenzy of attacks on me, my fiancé, and my company. The Trump propaganda machine and corporate media, which continue to fail America with their toxic “dualism,” pursued me with all their might; which resulted in me being interrogated and intimidated by the FBI and Secret Service,” Bumstad wrote.

He continued, “After those two agents left my bar Thursday night, I told my attorney, Fred, that I was running for governor. Since I couldn’t trust the Democratic Party to support me, nor the current slate of gubernatorial candidates—and because I had a social media clout that dwarfed theirs—I might as well stand up for myself and the rest of the working class for whom I’ve been loudly standing up for the past six years.”

Bangstad is seeking 2,000 signatures by June 1 to qualify for the November election.

When Bumstad was reached for comment, he harshly criticized Fox News Digital, saying: “I’ll tell you, the world is almost as excited about me running for governor as they are about #freebeerday.”

Bangstad ran for Congress in 2015 and for the Wisconsin State Assembly in 2020. He has since also formed the Minocqua Brewing Company SuperPAC, which “aims to remove Republican federal and state elected officials who perpetuated the election lies that led to the insurrection on January 6, 2021, who downplayed the severity of COVID-19 and caused so many unnecessary deaths in our country.” Company website.
