Valentine’s Day weekend should be all about love and adoration, but the National Weather Service is issuing winter storm warnings and weather advisories for 12 states that are heading into a cold and snowy weekend.
So while the overall weather trend across much of the United States is warmer from Thursday, February 12 through Valentine’s Day weekend, much of the country is still facing winter weather.
“A front has been lingering near the Gulf Coast Friday night, with a weak front trying to move inland over the West Coast. Upper-level energy across the Great Lakes will produce lake-effect snow downwind of the lakes, which will slowly taper off by Friday night,” the National Weather Service said in an official memo. They added that the rest of the country was bracing for heavy rain, saying, “Moisture will flow into the Southwest, producing light rain in the Southwest and expanding into the Southern Rockies and western Texas.”
Winter Storm Warnings and Weather Statements for Valentine’s Day Weekend
So, which states will get snow on Valentine’s Day weekend? West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Maine will all see some snow from Sunday, February 15 to Monday, February 16, according to a report from AccuWeather weather researchers. In addition to these 12 states, lake effect snow may also occur in the Great Lakes region, depending on conditions.
Senior meteorologist Chad Merrill said in a report released Wednesday, Feb. 11, that heavy rain in the Southeast has the potential to “move north quickly enough to move toward the Great Lakes by the end of the week, rather than moving from west to east across the country.”
“Stronger storms like this could increase the risk of severe weather in the Mississippi and Ohio valleys and could push large amounts of snow and ice further north into the Northeast,” senior meteorologist Alex Sosnowski added in the report. “The storm’s northward movement could mean significantly less rainfall in parts of the Southeast as well.”
A much-needed warm-up heading into Valentine’s Day weekend
The good news for those preparing to get away from the ice, snow and cold is that the week leading up to Valentine’s Day is experiencing warmer-than-normal weather across much of the United States.
