Where is the Farmers Insurance Open? What to know about Torrey Pines

The PGA Tour’s West Coast Tour continues this weekend with the Farmers Insurance Open.

Torrey Pines has hosted the event every year since the 1960s, when it was originally called the San Diego Open. In addition to the iconic views of the Pacific Ocean on its coastal bluffs, Torrey Pines has hosted some of the most memorable events in PGA Tour history, such as Tiger Woods’ victory in the 2008 U.S. Open.

Here’s information about Torrey Pines, including its location, history and the price of a round of golf:

Where is Farmers Insurance Business Location: Torrey Pines?

Torrey Pines Golf Course is located in La Jolla, California, 12 miles north of downtown San Diego. While municipal courses are more common on the PGA Tour than one might think, the Torrey Pines site prides itself on being “the premier municipal golf course owned and operated by the city.”

Perched on coastal bluffs with views of the Pacific Ocean, Torrey Pines takes its name from the native tree species along the local coastline of San Diego and Santa Rosa Island.

How many courses are offered at Torrey Pines?

Torrey Pines has two 18-hole courses in the north and south, and is used to host the Farmers Insurance Open every year. Players split the first 36 holes between the two courses and then play the final 36 holes on the South Course.

The South Course has also hosted the U.S. Open twice: In 2008, an injured Tiger Woods defeated Rocco Mediate in a 90-hole sudden-death playoff. In 2021, Jon Rahm birdied the final two holes to win by one shot.

Torrey Pines hosts the Genesis Invitational in 2025 after the event’s usual venue, Riviera Golf Club, was damaged in the Pacific Palisades fire.

How much does it cost to visit Torrey Pines?

Torrey Pines calls itself “undoubtedly the most accessible public facility for die-hard golfers who want to play at a world-renowned facility whose name nearly every golfer knows.” While that exact statement is open to debate, a round at the course certainly pays off.

The North Course is a more affordable option, with weekday tee times starting at $163, or $51 for San Diego residents. Prices on the North Course climb to $203 on weekends and holidays ($68 for locals).

Tee times on the South Course, which overlooks the ocean, are more expensive, starting at $258 on weekdays ($73 for residents) and $322 on weekends ($90 for residents). All prices are based on the City of San Diego reservation website and do not include a $32 advance reservation fee or any equipment or golf cart rental fees.
