How does the NFL playoffs work?

There are 14 teams participating in the play-offs, including 7 teams promoted from the American Football Conference (AFC) and 7 teams promoted from the National Football League (NFC).

Each league plays 12 elimination games over three weeks to determine which team will represent their league in the Super Bowl (the NFL’s championship game).

Teams are seeded from 1 to 7, and the team that wins each division in 17 regular season games automatically qualifies for the division round (second week of the playoffs).

This season, the Denver Broncos earned the No. 1 seed in the AFC and the Seattle Seahawks earned the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

The other 12 teams advance from the first round, known as Wild Card Weekend, with the highest remaining seed in each round having home field advantage.

In the wild-card round, the second-ranked team in each conference plays the seventh-seeded team, the third-ranked team plays the sixth-seeded team, and the fourth-ranked team plays the fifth-seeded team.

The winners of those six games will join the top-seeded team in the conference round, with the top-seeded team playing the lowest-ranked team and the other two teams playing.

The winner of those four games will advance to the conference championship game—effectively the Super Bowl semifinals—and a chance to play in Super Bowl 60.
