What is Commanders’ weakest position group one week into free agency?

Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters had a great first week of free agency, didn’t he? So, which position group do you think is currently the weakest on March 15, 2026?

It’s certainly not offensive guards and tackles. Peters has re-signed four players: Andrew Wylie, Nick Allegretti, Laremy Tunsil and Chris Paul. They have depth along the line, the only question is who will be under center? Will Peters sign a veteran center or draft one who will compete with Allegretti?

Quarterback might actually be their strongest position, even though they just lost No. 3 quarterback Josh Johnson, who signed with the Bengals on Saturday. But they return Jaden Daniels and one of the best backups in the NFL in Marcus Mariota. The No. 3 quarterback in 2026 may not be on the roster yet. It seems like Sam Hartman just isn’t developing.

At running back, they do lose Chris Rodriguez, who is a hard-working runner who I’ve seen do a good job on kickoffs and kickoffs multiple times. However, Rodriguez received an offer from the Jaguars that he simply couldn’t refuse. The Commanders signed RB Jerome Ford from the Browns on Saturday to replace Rodriguez. Peters also signed RB Rachaad White on Thursday. He’s a quality receiver out of the backfield, so he essentially replaces Austin Ekeler.

There’s good news; Peters has done a great job addressing the weaknesses of the 2025 defensive line, linebacker, and they’ve also improved their depth at receiver. He may also sign a starting tight end.

So, back to our question about the weakest position right now? Given that they’re giving up the most yards of any defense in the NFL in 2025, that’s a lot of work to do. Suffice it to say, Peters did some big work on defense in Week 1. However, Peters himself agrees that there is more work to be done at the cornerback position.
