Well-known Portland chef arrested following announcement of restaurant closure

Portland, Oregon. (coyne) — A well-known Portland-area chef has been charged with domestic violence.

Luna Contreras, the chef behind Mexican pop-up restaurant and hot sauce brand Chelo, was arrested Dec. 19 on four misdemeanor charges, including domestic violence.

According to court documents, Contreras arrived at her intimate partner’s residence intoxicated. It is alleged she began to roughly grab and fondle her partner and put her hands around her neck. Contreras is also accused of throwing a glass bottle at her. Contreras’ partner then pushed her outside and locked the door.

When building security arrived, Contreras reportedly attempted to use a Taser on an officer’s leg. Security guards took the Taser away before anyone was shot, court documents show.

Most recently, Contreras ran the Mexican pop-up restaurant Chelo, which closure December 19 – the same day she was arrested. She also has a hot sauce line of the same name.

Contreras faces charges of fourth-degree attempted assault constituting domestic violence, two counts of harassment and second-degree unlawful use of a stun gun.

At her trial on December 22, she pleaded not guilty to all charges. Contreras was released on his own recognizance. Her next court appearance is Jan. 20.
