‘We are only beginning to understand’

Researchers are sounding the alarm after discovering that melting Antarctic glaciers are releasing antibiotic resistance genes.

What happened?

A study published in the journal Biological Pollutants looked at the impact of melting glaciers on water supplies.

Glaciers are reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and other microorganisms. When they are released from the ice, they enter our water systems, posing significant health risks to people downstream.

Millions of people get their water from glacier-fed rivers and lakes. ARGs are strands of DNA that make bacteria more resistant to drugs. When antimicrobials from meltwater enter our water supplies, they become a global public health risk.

The study highlights the importance of considering glaciers, rivers and lakes as part of the “glacial continuum”. This means they are an interconnected system rather than separate environments.

Why is melting glaciers a concern?

From gasoline-powered cars to overconsumption, human activities contribute to the production of heat-trapping gases that warm the planet. Rising global temperatures are causing glaciers to melt rapidly, causing sea levels to rise and releasing ARG.

ARGs produced by melting glaciers are concerning because they help promote the spread of disease. This threat is exacerbated by the fact that the growing problem of microplastics also contributes to the proliferation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. As a result, the medication becomes less and less effective.

What can we do about melting glaciers?

One of the ways we can combat rising temperatures is by choosing a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. This may include installing solar panels, which can help you lower utility rates and reduce energy-related pollution.

TCD’s Solar Explorer organizes competitive bids from vetted installers, saving you up to $10,000 in installation costs. TCD partner EnergySage offers free services to help people find installers, save thousands of dollars and learn about available incentives.

Continued research into the effects of melting glaciers can help us understand and address ARG issues.

“Climate change is reshaping microbial risks in ways that we are just beginning to understand,” study co-author Mao Guannan of Lanzhou University told The Microbiologist.

“Recognizing that glaciers are part of the global antibiotic resistance landscape is an important step towards protecting the environment and human health.”
