In fact, United were lucky to escape with a draw, relying on a stellar performance from goalkeeper Sene Lamenz to keep them in the game.

Still, the Red Devils did have a good chance of victory in the final seconds when Matheus Cunha was alone in the box, but his shot went straight at the Sunderland goalkeeper.
It proved a valuable point as both Liverpool and Aston Villa dropped points and United now need just one point from their remaining two games to secure third place.

Manchester United’s all-time top scorer Wayne Rooney reflected on the match on BBC Match of the Day and it’s safe to say he wasn’t impressed with what he witnessed.

Looking back on the game, he said: “Manchester United’s performance was mediocre. It felt like an ‘end of season’ game for both teams.”
A number of players who don’t usually feature were given the opportunity to start, such as Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount, but they didn’t seem to take the task seriously.
Rooney posed the question: “But have the players joining Manchester United today done enough to justify staying at the club next season? Probably not.”

A former team-mate of current manager Michael Carrick claims the game will be a useful reminder of where his former side need to improve in the summer transfer window.

Rooney explained: “Michael Carrick is clear they have to make some big investments in the summer to play in the Champions League.”
