Another Minnesota television news show is retiring in a few months.
Belinda Jensen will retire on May 2 after 33 years as meteorologist and anchor at KARE 11, the Twin Cities NBC affiliate announced Monday morning.
“From day one 33 years ago at the age of 25, I felt this was an extraordinary opportunity and I didn’t want to take it for granted,” Jensen said in a statement.
Jensen has served as the station’s chief meteorologist since 2005 and began working at KARE as an intern in 1989. After brief stints at the National Weather Service and a television station in Salt Lake City, Utah, she was hired into a full-time position in 1993.
“I interned under Paul Douglas at the University of Wisconsin in 1989 and interviewed him in 10th grade for a term paper on meteorology, so this was a real dream job for me from the beginning,” Jensen said.
“KARE always pushed me to try things I never thought I could do, and each year led to more fun and incredible experiences. The trip to Minnesota, ‘Growing Up with KARE,’ hosting the 2002 Olympics, becoming the author of the ‘Bell Weather Girls’ series of books and, of course, hosting the Saturday morning show for 33 years and finally becoming a chief meteorologist, all of which I wasn’t sure I could accomplish.”
Despite her impending retirement, KARE said Jensen will still “intermit with the KARE 11 audience from time to time” on the KARE 11 Saturday morning show – which she has hosted for the past 33 years.
With Jensen retiring, it’s unclear whether the station plans to hire another meteorologist to join meteorologists John Ziegler, Jamie Cargore, Courtney Aitken, Lauren Betke and Ben Delay.
The station has not yet revealed who will take over as chief meteorologist.
“KARE 11 is more than just a workplace; it’s a family,” said Jensen. “To the loyal viewers who welcome me into their homes every day, thank you for your trust, loyalty and kindness and for allowing me to be a part of your lives.”
