Maine Democrat Graham Platner claims tax-the-rich policies aren’t ‘trying’ hard enough

Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Plattner said in a new interview that real plans to tax the wealthy have yet to be properly tried.

Plattner discussed his goal of reining in billionaires on the “More Perfect Union” podcast Thursday, arguing they have “too much power” and are “currently running the country” instead of President Donald Trump.

Plattner was then asked about implementing policies to chase billionaires, such as raising taxes, without affecting small businesses as much as they have in the past.

“I think, and I’ll be honest, I think the reason the middle class suffers every time they try is they don’t actually try,” Plattner said. “Because if they do, it’s going to bother the people who are donating the most to them. In this political system, that seems to be all those people care about.”

Plattner said his old college roommate, who later became an IRS agent, gave him insight into how to encourage government organizations to target small businesses rather than billionaires.

“He’s always told me over the years, ‘You know, it’s funny.
