Warning issued over bogus taxis during Christmas

Police are urging people to be wary of fake taxis over the festive period.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council encourages people to plan ahead and only use legally licensed taxis.

The authorities said taxi enforcement officers will be in Beverley from 20:00 to 03:00 GMT on December 18 and 19 and from 22:00 to 03:00 on New Year’s Eve to help people get home safely.

Councilor Lyn Healing said: “We often see an increase in unlicensed taxi activity at this time of year, so it’s vital that we take extra steps to ensure safety.”

Over the festive period, the council said its licensing team had seen an increase in reports of fake vehicles claiming to be legitimate taxi services.

Authorities say these unlicensed drivers or vehicles are not vetted or inspected and are often offered illegally through social media.

East Riding licensed vehicles have a white oval door sticker with an illuminated sign at the top that reads “TAXI”. All licensed drivers will have an identification badge issued by the council.

Vehicles licensed in the region are equipped with internal CCTV, a recording function that can be activated by the passenger or driver, and a dash cam.

The council said residents who have not booked their journey home in advance will only be able to use Hackney Carriage taxis in the East Riding for immediate hire.

Vehicles from outside the area cannot legally pick up customers for immediate rentals. Doing so could invalidate their insurance, the authorities added.
