Walmart shoppers thought they were tipping delivery drivers. They weren’t

Drivers in Wisconsin’s Walmart grocery delivery program will receive more than $600,000 in compensation as part of a settlement between Walmart and multiple state and federal agencies.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice announced the settlement on Feb. 27, saying it came after Walmart was accused of misrepresenting payments to drivers, including withholding some tips and changing wages after taking orders.

Wisconsin and the FTC are among 11 states suing Walmart. The total settlement amount is $100 million.

The settlement agreement also includes other provisions. Walmart must provide annual driver wage reports to the Federal Trade Commission for 10 years, and the company is prohibited from modifying orders or misrepresenting delivery revenue after a driver accepts an order.

“People deserve honest information about what they will be paid,” Attorney General Josh Kaul said in a news release.

Walmart’s program, called “Spark Driver,” pays people to deliver groceries and other goods to customers. The program has nearly 1 million drivers and has completed 272 million deliveries, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice.
