Venus Williams gets wild-card entree for Miami Open

Venus Williams will participate in the upcoming Miami Open as a wild card.

The three-time Miami Open champion will join former champion Sloane Stephens and five emerging stars among the wild-card winners at the event, which will be held at Hard Rock Stadium from March 15-29. Williams, 45, made her Miami debut 29 years ago in 1997 and won her first Miami trophy a year later. She recently lost in the first round to Diane Parry at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California.

Stephens won here in 2018. Joining them as women’s wild cards are Taylor Townsend, Ashlyn Krueger, Jennifer Brady, Lilli Tagger, Emerson Jones and Darja Vidmanova.

Seven-time Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1 Williams will participate in this event for the 23rd time. She will compete in the WTA 1000 level event for the 111th time, ranking fifth in history.

The Jupiter Island resident recently became the oldest female player to compete in the Australian Open after she was awarded a wild card into the main draw.

Stephens is an eight-time WTA champion, winning the 2017 U.S. Open and finishing runner-up at the French Open and WTA Finals in 2018.
