Utah adds TE coach with Big 12 experience and ties to another Beehive State school

The next step in building Morgan Scully’s first coaching staff is in place after Utah announced Tuesday that Luke Wills will join the University of Utah as the school’s tight ends coach.

Wells replaced Freddie Whittingham, who left and took over the Michigan job with his brother, Kyle Whittingham. Kyle Whittingham has been the Utes head coach for 21 years and now oversees the Wolverines’ program.

“Luke brings a wealth of experience to our staff in the conference that will be extremely beneficial,” Sculley said in a statement. “He has spent time coaching multiple position groups, is known for developing players, and can help us in many different ways on offense. I look forward to welcoming him to the Utah family!”

With Jason Beck serving as Utah’s offensive coordinator for one year and most of his assistants joining Whittingham at Michigan, the Utah coaching staff has undergone a major overhaul on that side of the ball.

That includes hiring Kevin McGivern as offensive coordinator, Jordan Gross as offensive line coach and Chad Bonfis as wide receivers coach.

On offense, the only remaining assistant coach from the previous regime is running backs coach Mark Atuaia.

Wells has extensive ties to the Big 12 and served as an assistant coach at Utah State from 2013-18, coaching alongside his brother, former Aggies head coach Matt Wells.

Luke Wells, most recently the tight ends coach at Kansas State, is once again working with his brother, the Wildcats’ offensive coordinator.

Wells spends the 2025 season with the Wildcats after two years as a high school assistant coach and one season at Tulsa.

Prior to that, Wells served as tight ends coach at Texas Tech (2019-21) and as a graduate assistant at Utah State, Iowa State (2009-12), Louisiana-Monroe (2003-08) and Oklahoma State (1999-2001).

“I am extremely grateful to Coach Scully for the opportunity to join his staff and be part of a winning culture at the university,” Wells said in a statement. “I am excited to return to Utah State and ready to work with this talented tight end room.”

While at Kansas State, Wells helped develop tight end Garrett Oakley, who earned All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors in one season with 38 catches for 389 yards and six touchdowns.

At Utah State, Wells served as offensive coordinator for four years, including his final season at Logan when the team averaged 47.5 points per game in 2018.
