Canada and the United States both finished first in their groups, and men’s ice hockey has entered the knockout rounds of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
The past three gold medal winners have been Finland, Olympian Athletes Russia (OAR) and Canada (2014). Four years ago in 2010, Canada defeated the United States in the Vancouver final to win gold again.

The United States has won a total of 11 medals in ice hockey, but the U.S. team has not won a gold medal since 1980, more than 45 years ago. Their only other gold medal came in 1960.
But 2026 will be the first time NHL players will compete in Olympic hockey since 2014. Historically, the NHL and the International Olympic Committee have been unable to reach an agreement on allowing NHL players to participate in games. This will be the case in 2018 and 2022, affecting the United States, Canada, and many other countries.
With rejoining the NHL, Team Canada has become the favorite for the gold medal at the Milan Olympics. The United States trails Canada as the second favorite, but the U.S. is billed as the favorite to beat in women’s hockey.
