The Dallas Cowboys may be disappointing their fans with their lack of big free-agent moves after committing over budget, but they’re certainly not sitting idle. Wednesday is the official first day of the new league year, but it’s also the third day of roster changes starting with the legal tampering window opening on Monday.
The Cowboys made a big trade on Monday and made a significant (if not budget-breaking) free agent signing. But other than that, it’s the typical little play that Cowboys fans have become accustomed to. On Wednesday, however, the Cowboys were focused on clearing their cap space and getting rid of players who don’t exactly fit their plans.

The Cowboys traded away two DTs, first Osa Odjizuwa and soon after Solomon Thomas. In return, the Cowboys received the 49ers’ third-round pick and moved up seven spots in the seventh round. Combined with the two picks they acquired on Monday, their draft outcome changes dramatically.
Here’s what they’re working on now.
Depending on how the NFL calculates playing time and contract rankings, the second overall pick could be RB Rico Dowdle (who went to the Carolina Panthers), WR Brandin Cooks (Bills) or cornerback Jourdan Lewis (Jacksonville Jaguars).

The Cowboys don’t have a second-round pick due to the trade of Quinnen Williams from the Jets. Their third-round pick was traded to the Steelers for WR George Pickens. Their sixth-round pick was acquired by the Giants in the 2024 Jordan Phillips trade.
The 2026 seventh-round pick the Cowboys received from New York in the Phillips trade was sent to the Cincinnati Bengals last year for linebacker Logan Wilson. Last spring, the Cowboys’ own 2021 seventh-round pick was traded to the Buffalo Bills for Kaiir Elam. The seventh-round pick they included in the Thomas trade came from the Kansas City Chiefs in the Payton Hendershot trade.
The NFL Draft will tip off on Thursday, April 23, 2026 at 7:00 pm Central Time.
