UNC football to lose key defensive player to transfer portal

The North Carolina Tar Heels will need to retool their roster this offseason after a disappointing start to the Bill Belichick era. With bowl season underway, the transfer portal will open in early January. Several Tar Heels have already revealed their decisions.

On Wednesday, a key defensive player announced his plans to enter the transfer portal. According to multiple reports, Tyler Thompson will enter the transfer portal as North Carolina loses one of its best players on defense.

He had a breakout season in Chapel Hill, finishing with 7.5 sacks and ranking fourth in the ACC in sacks this season, including three against Stanford.

A descendant of the Mack Brown era, Thompson spent three seasons in Chapel Hill. In 2023, he only appeared in three games, and in 2024, that number increased to 12 games. Now, he’s looking for a new home and hopes to continue playing after his breakout season.
