UH men’s basketball team inundates UC Riverside

The Hawaii men’s basketball team dominated all sections and positions as they defeated UC Riverside 88-45 today at SRC Arena in Riverside, California.

The Rainbow Warriors hit 13 three-pointers, tying a season high, and built a 46-24 advantage on the boards. The Archers’ 16 offensive rebounds contributed to 16 second-chance points.

‘Bows showed no sign of rust after the 18-day hiatus. The Archers scored the first 10 points and 15 of the first 17 points to make it 41-22 with 3:52 left in the first half. The point difference widened to 44 points in the second half.

“It’s a byproduct of preparation and when the guys were with us (before the break), they handled this unique time well,” head coach Elain Garnaut said. “When they came back, obviously, very strong all around. We bounced back. We shared the ball. I thought we did a good job running the ball. Our defense was strong, especially in the second half, the way we came out of the gate. It was a complete performance.”

The Highlanders lost point guard DeAndre Peltette, who is recovering from a knee injury. Freshman Tyler Jones made his first start as Pellet’s backup. With 13 new recruits, the Highlanders’ plans are rooted in lost posts. Head coach Gus Agenar said the goal is to accumulate 50 touches per game.

But the Archers were able to score through high and low offense. Isaac “Big Fish” Johnson rolled to the perimeter and hit his first three 3-pointers. Johnson scored 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting. The Archers led 40-26 on points in the paint.

Gytis Nemeiksa came off the bench to score 13 points. Isaac Finlinson scored 10 points. The Archers had 21 assists on 34 field goals. All 10 archers participating in the competition scored.

The Highlanders had 16 shots on goal and four assists.

The Bows improve to 11-2 overall and 3-0 in the Big West. They complete a two-game road trip Saturday against UC San Diego.

Prior to today’s game, UH announced that forward Jalen Miles has been removed from the active roster.
