UEL | Celta Vigo 1-2 Bologna: Bernardeschi inspires Rossoblu comeback

On a rainy night in Galicia, Bologna fought back from 1-0 down to beat Celta Vigo 2-1.

The home side took the lead after a sharp counterattack, with Bryan Zaragoza giving the La Liga side a 1-0 lead at half-time. However, a second-half penalty came shortly after Bologna’s goal was disallowed, with Federico Bernardeschi confidently converting the penalty.

Bologna were more energized after the equaliser, chasing the winning goal, and were rewarded when Bernardeschi calmly struck home to double the score.

Bologna must now focus on their remaining two games, against Celtic and Maccabi Tel Aviv in January.

Bologna were the better side for much of the first half.

Vincenzo Italiano’s side dominated possession, spending much of the first forty-five minutes inside Vigo’s half. However, the Galician defense was resolute, apart from a slight scare when Jonathan Rowe headed the ball away after dangerous English pressing.

In fact, Bologna’s pressing looked good for much of the first half, except when it allowed Vigo to push forward and take the lead, which largely went against the flow of the game.

However, the Italian’s side suffocated Vigo and the La Liga side really struggled to get the ball out of their half. However, unlike Bologna, they took advantage of their first chance of the game and took the lead at half-time.

Bernardeschi’s second-half comeback

Just after the hour mark, Bologna thought they had leveled the score when a beautiful pass from Moreau found Bernardeschi on the right, who squared the ball for Pobega to score. However, Moreau’s ball was ruled offside and Bologna was back to square one.

However, a few minutes later the Roseau Blues got their lucky break. After a foul in the penalty area, the referee blew a penalty before the offside flag was raised, determining that Pobega had been offside before being fouled.

However, a quick VAR check confirmed this and Bernardeschi leveled the score with ease.

With renewed energy, it wasn’t long before the experienced Italian was on target again, calmly slotting the ball into the back of the net to give his side the lead.
