UCLA hangs on to beat Washington 82-80 in Big Ten opener behind Clark and Bilodeau

SEATTLE (AP) — Skye Clark hit six 3-pointers and scored 25 points, Tyler Bilodeau scored 20 of his 21 points in the second half and UCLA led by 16 points with less than five minutes remaining to win its Big Ten conference opener 82-80 over Washington on Wednesday night.

The Huskies trailed 76-60 with 4:45 left, but went on a 17-2 run to make it 78-77 on Quimari Peterson’s 3-pointer with 36.7 seconds left. Clark was fouled on a three-pointer with 14.5 seconds left, extending the lead to 81-77, but Zoom Diallo responded with a three-pointer with 8.7 seconds left.

Donovan Dent was fouled with 4.9 seconds left but missed his second free throw. Diallo’s 3-pointer from the right wing at the buzzer was too strong.

Dent had 17 points and eight assists for the Bruins (6-2), who have won their eighth straight conference opener.

Hannes Steinbach had 29 points and 10 rebounds on 11-of-12 shooting for Washington (5-3). Diallo scored 19 points, while Peterson and Wesley Yates III each had 12 points.

In less than six minutes of the second half, Bilodeau hit a 3-pointer and drained three 3-pointers to give UCLA 16 consecutive points. Steinbach scored 16 points in the second half and scored nine straight points to help the Huskies get back into the game.

Jamal Brown and Clark hit consecutive three-pointers to end the first half, and the Bruins led 36-32. Clark maintained his hot touch in the first half and scored the first goal in the second half.
