According to NOLA.com’s Geurry Smith, LSU football’s top assistant coach and defensive coordinator Blake Baker has interviewed for the vacant head coaching position at Tulane University. FOX 8’s Garland Gillen also reported on the interview.
The news comes the same day LSU named Lane Kiffin the Tigers’ new head coach. Earlier Monday, reports surfaced that Kiffin intended to keep Baker, and that’s likely to remain the case. But LSU will have competition for Baker’s services.

The Tulane job began when Green Wave head coach Jon Sumrall accepted the Florida State head coaching job. Baker was immediately chosen as the top choice to succeed Samral. Baker is familiar with Louisiana after playing college ball at Tulane, working at Louisiana Tech and two stints at LSU.
Baker’s LSU defense is one of the best in the country this year. The unit is ranked No. 9 nationally according to ESPN’s SP+. LSU’s 2023 defense was one of the worst in SEC history in 2023 – Baker arrived in 2024 and immediately produced results.
Baker doesn’t have too many holes in his resume. Baker is a perfect fit for New Orleans given Tulane being his alma mater and the work he did at LSU. Losing Baker would be huge for LSU and could lead to some outs on defense, but LSU has the motivation and resources to hire another top defensive coordinator.
