Tyren Montgomery: small school prospect turns heads at Senior Bowl

John Carroll University is a small Jesuit college located in a suburb of Cleveland. This university in Highland, Ohio, has a football program at the D-3 level and has a total enrollment of just 2,864 (graduate + undergraduate) as of 2024.

One of those 2,800-plus people was Tyren Montgomery, who headlined Wednesday’s Senior Bowl. Almost every year, we see a small school prospect fly under the radar and make a name for himself on the eve of the NFL Draft.

Montgomery made his biggest catch of early practice Wednesday, when he made a very athletic touchdown catch around the body of San Diego State cornerback Chris Johnson:

Johnson was a solid prospect in his own right and provided good coverage in that game, but Montgomery simply outplayed him. According to NFL.com: “The game was emblematic of Montgomery’s athleticism and competitiveness, which put him firmly on the radar of NFL scouts.”

CBS Sports, meanwhile, said Montgomery “stole the show” on Wednesday as he had “good footwork all day, especially when quick-freezing defensive backs.”

Montgomery, a 6-foot-1, 185-year-old former LSU basketball walk-on. He spent two years at Nicholls between LSU and John Carroll. Considering the hype and “bars” he’s received over the past two days (not to mention his performance at the Bowl), it’s now fair to project him as a potential top-100 draft pick. Montgomery might even impress him enough that he might slide into the late two of the day.

It is worth mentioning that John Carroll, nicknamed “Blue Streak”, also happened to be where Don Shula, the winningest coach in NFL history, played college ball. So despite its small size it does have some great football history.
