Trump’s Treasury Secretary Is Getting Dragged To Filth For What He Said About Retirees Owning Homes

Table of Contents

The Trump administration is known for officials saying things out loud that should be kept in their minds. Time and time again, someone steps up to the microphone and makes a comment that feels completely disconnected from how most Americans actually live. Last week, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins confidently suggested that people could feed themselves on as little as $3 per meal, as if grocery prices, food deserts and inflation were all imaginary problems. Now, there’s a new entry in that long list of disengagement moments…

Earlier today, multi-millionaire Treasurer Scott Bessent casually suggested that owning five, 10 or even 12 homes was a normal and relatable experience for retirees.

Bessant made the comments during a discussion on housing policy with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo in Davos, Switzerland. “There are people, maybe your parents, buying five, 10, 12 homes for retirement,” he said, referring to the government’s efforts to protect “mom and pop” homebuyers from large groups of investors.

The Daily Beast pointed out that according to the U.S. Census Bureau, only 65% of Americans own a home and only 4% own a second home. So, yes, the idea that retirees typically own five or more homes is not realistic.
