president Donald Trump In a Truth Society post on Monday afternoon, House Republicans urged House Republicans to reopen the federal government “immediately.”

“I’m working with Speaker Johnson to get the current financing deal that passed the Senate last week through the House and to my desk, where I will sign it into law immediately!” the president continued:

We need to keep the government open, and I hope all Republicans and Democrats will join me in supporting this bill and sending it to my desk immediately. No changes can be made at this time. We will work together in good faith to address the issues raised, but we cannot have another long, pointless and damaging shutdown that will severely harm our country — and it will not be good for Republicans or Democrats. I hope everyone will vote, YES!

A partial government shutdown began Saturday morning as Republicans and Democrats continued to battle over funding for the Department of Homeland Security and an ongoing dispute over the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts. Renee Goode and Alex Pretty.

The White House reached a deal last week to continue funding the Department of Homeland Security at current levels for two weeks to allow for further negotiations, and the Senate on Friday passed a legislative package to take action on the deal.

Now, Trump is calling on the aforementioned speaker Mike Johnson (R-Los Angeles) brought the same legislation to the House floor for a vote, despite opposition from some conservatives in its caucus to the deal.

CNN provided more context in a report Monday morning:

Every vote Johnson casts is crucial to the narrow majority. The Louisiana Republican could only lose two defections on a party-line vote. That gap could soon be even lower: House Democrats elected another congressman from Texas — Christian Menifee — in a special election over the weekend. Once Menifee was sworn in, Johnson could only afford one defection.

Top House Democrats have told Johnson they have no intention of helping him advance the deal Trump reached with Senate Democrats.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries Democrats told Johnson on a conference call Saturday that they would not help Republicans pass the bill if they tried to fast-track it on Monday, according to two people familiar with the matter. The move comes after Republican leaders decided not to attempt the fast-track process and instead proceed through the regular process — which would require near-unanimous approval within House Republicans to advance the bill.
