Tribunal Set Chelsea Compensation for Liverpool’s Ngumoha Signing

After signing young winger Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea’s academy back in the summer of 2024, the courts have been waiting 18 months to rule on how much the Reds should pay the London Blues for the outstanding young talent, and today that ruling was quashed.

In total, Liverpool could end up paying a maximum of £6.8m, although £4m of that is in additions based on senior appearances, England caps and an extension to his Liverpool contract, with the 17-year-old only required to pay £2.8m in guaranteed money.

Chelsea will also receive 20% of future profits if Ngumoha is sold, which could become the most lucrative part of the actual pay package. Liverpool’s latest major signing to go to court is Harvey Elliott, whose contract is worth £4.3 million, including £1.5 million in advance payments.

In England, court rulings on players signed from another club’s academy seek to set fees closer to market value to stop the richest clubs poaching young talent indiscriminately and ensure smaller clubs can continue to invest in their academies.

This often results in fees in the hundreds of thousands and sometimes millions. In contrast, for transfers between different leagues, UEFA only provides training compensation of between 100,000 and 90,000 pounds per year, depending on the category of the buying club.
