Trendy women’s clothing retailer closes 151 locations

Another popular shopping mall apparel giant is downsizing its retail stores in response to falling sales.

Torrid, which targets women aged 10 to 30, announced in its 2025 year-end report to shareholders that it would close 151 “structurally inefficient” stores in 2025, including 77 in the fourth quarter.

The brand was founded in 2001 in City of Industry, California, and opened its first store at Brea Mall. As of early 2026, there are 483 locations in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Canada.

Torrid CEO Lisa Harper told investors that net sales fell 9.4% year over year to $1 billion, while expressing confidence that the company was about to turn a profit.

“We closed 151 structurally inefficient plants, launched five sub-brands with approximately $70 million in sales, and fundamentally restructured our product offerings around core franchises and manufacturing that our customers value most,” Harper said. “Trends in the fourth quarter and early first quarter give us confidence that the foundation we have built is starting to take hold.”

2025 is a tough year for many established mall retailers. Forever 21 and Rue21 have closed all remaining stores, while Claire’s, Carter’s, American Eagle Outfitters, Victoria’s Secret and Foot Locker have also closed numerous stores.
