A new report from ESPN states that 1587 Sneakers is suing for trademark infringement due to similarities between its business name and that of Kelce and Mahomes’ upscale Kansas City restaurant 1587 Prime.

The two superstar athletes first opened the steakhouse at the Loews Hotel in Kansas City in 2025, on Mahomes’ 30th birthday, and combined their numbers to create the restaurant’s name.

ESPN explained that the potential legal issues center on “unregistered rights owned by the sneaker company” since it filed a trademark application in 2025, even though it began sales in April 2023.

As of press time, the trademark application for 1587 Sneakers is still under review.

Meanwhile, Mahomes and Kelce filed for trademarks for the Midwestern restaurant in December 2023.

However, the two companies’ trademarks fall into different categories. Paperwork for NFL players falls under the bar and restaurant department, and paperwork for a shoe company falls under the apparel department.

Trademark attorney Josh Gerben of Gerben IP, who is not affiliated with either party in the case, spoke with ESPN about the matter and seemed skeptical of the longevity of the sneaker company’s lawsuit.

“I think it’s a tough case for sneaker companies,” he said. “Trademarks can coexist in different industries. … Given that the trademarks here are essentially the same, are a restaurant and a shoe company too close? Is it possible that consumers will be confused and think they are connected to each other?”

“1587 Sneakers” also claims Mahomes and Kelce are selling merchandise with digital combinations, confusing partners and the public

The alleged trademark infringement involves more than just the name. In the lawsuit, 1587 Sneakers also claims Mahomes and Kelce’s steakhouses sell items with number combinations on them.

The company’s owners claim that their company has been contacted by “numerous consumers” who believe it is connected to Mahomes and Kelce’s restaurants.

“From the outset, we have expressed a sincere belief that there is room for mutual respect and understanding,” an attorney for the sneaker company said in a statement. “That belief has not changed, and we remain hopeful of resolving this matter amicably.”
