Three storms could bring additional snow or cold weather to Connecticut this weekend into the middle of next week, according to the National Weather Service.
Much to the relief of snow-weary Nutmeggers, weather models as of Thursday show a slim chance of a major storm affecting Connecticut Monday into Tuesday.
Instead, the storm is expected to stay farther south in Connecticut and bring snow into the mid-Atlantic and a wintry mix further south.
Ahead of that, a clipper-style storm is expected to bring scattered snow showers to Connecticut on Sunday. Snowfall amounts were light, only about 1-2 inches. But the National Weather Service said temperatures will continue to be much cooler Sunday night into Monday night after the storm passes.
Another storm could bring wintry weather to Connecticut by midweek.
Here are details on three storms that could bring cold weather to the state in the coming days:
Stormy weekend with light snow and colder temperatures
First up is an Arctic cold front moving in on Sunday, expected to bring some light snow. Since there isn’t much moisture in the system, precipitation should be fairly light.
Like Wednesday morning’s fast-moving storm, Sunday’s storm is also known as a fast-moving storm system. The storm featured a blast of frigid arctic air sweeping from southwestern Canada into the northern United States.
The National Weather Service’s New York office noted that the storm has the potential to trigger blizzards, but that “the areas most likely to experience blizzards are to the north and west” in New York City.
The cold air behind the storm could ultimately have a bigger impact. Temperatures are expected to plummet into the teens Sunday night, while parts of northern Connecticut could see temperatures drop into the single digits. After Saturday, highs are expected to reach around 50.
The cold weather will continue into Monday and Monday night. Daytime highs will remain below freezing before lows Monday night will once again be in the single digits.
Temperatures should climb back above freezing on Tuesday.
Storms will continue in southern Connecticut Monday through Tuesday
As of Thursday afternoon, the chance of a major storm affecting Connecticut early next week looked slim.
Weather models as of Thursday show the storm will hit southern Connecticut, with snow in the mid-Atlantic and wintry weather in the South Monday morning into early Tuesday.
“While the impact of this event is gradually diminishing, the possibility of a few inches of snow accumulation cannot be completely ruled out,” the Weather Service’s New York office said.
Residents may have seen the hype surrounding the storm on social media and posted posts warning of another major storm. So far, that doesn’t appear to be the case.
Midweek winter mix
A third system that could impact Connecticut is set to arrive by the middle of next week.
Models show the storm moving in early Wednesday morning and exiting by early afternoon. As temperatures warm Wednesday, the storm will likely start with snow and then transition to rain.
