Third period turnover sinks No. 13 Wisconsin hockey at Ohio State

The Wisconsin men’s lacrosse team’s three-game winning streak ended in heartbreaking fashion on Saturday, February 14th.

Ohio State’s Ryan Gordon stole the ball in the Badgers zone and scored the game-winner nine minutes into the third period to give the Buckeyes a 3-2 win at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio.

Gordon’s goal spoiled a night that saw Wisconsin, ranked No. 13 in the USCHO.com poll, not trail in the first two periods and scored twice on the power play.

Senior Simon Tassy was first to receive the honors, scoring for the third straight game 23 seconds before the end of the first quarter. It was freshman Vasily Zelenov’s turn next, and he helped Washington lead 2-1 at 10 minutes and 47 seconds of the second quarter.

Score: Ohio State 3, No. 13 Wisconsin 2

Every Ohio State goal was evenly matched. Gordon scored his first two-goal game of the season.

Freshman Jake Carabella set up Gordon’s game-winning goal. He tied the game with a backhand pass from sophomore Felix Caron at 3:54 of the third quarter. It was Carabella’s fourth goal in the last six games.

A win would move Wisconsin (18-10-2, 11-9 Big Ten – 30 points) into a tie for third in the Big Ten with Penn State, which has played two fewer games. With the split, Ohio State improved to 18-10-2 and 11-16-1 – 22 points.

Washington’s next opponent is No. 2 Michigan at the Cole Center. The puck drops on Friday, February 20th at 7pm and February 21st at 6pm.
