These free-agency predictions would spell disaster for Commanders

The Washington Commanders are already busy this offseason, with free agency still a month away. Washington parted ways with standout offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury due to philosophical differences in the direction of the offense. Washington also fired defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. and offensive line coach. In response, the Commanders promoted assistant quarterbacks coach David Braff and assistant offensive line coach Darnell Stapleton to offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, respectively.

To replace Whitt, the Commander hired Vikings defensive backs coach Daronte Jones. The moves have won praise but are not without risks.

Now, general manager Adam Peters is under pressure to improve talent, especially on defense.

The Commanders have money to spend and need to actively participate in free agency and sign multiple starters. Washington also must come to an agreement on a contract extension for left tackle Laremy Tunsil, which could temporarily reset the offensive tackle market.

How active will Washington be next month? Peters understands he needs to provide his coaches with better talent, and the Commanders don’t have picks in the second and fourth rounds of the 2026 NFL Draft. In a report from Fox Sports, Gregg Allman listed the 100 best free agents in 2026 and potential fits for those players.

If Allman’s prediction comes true, Washington fans will be ready to run Peters out of town.

Allman gave the Commanders two of his top 100 picks: former Patriots and Steelers safety Kyle Dugger and former Cowboys and Packers cornerback Trayvon Diggs.

Seriously.

Here’s what he had to say about each player.

91. Kyle Dugger, small forward, Steelers

The 29-year-old Dugger was jettisoned by the Patriots’ defense in a draft pick swap to join the Steelers as part of the Patriots’ transformation through 2025, excluding the final two years of a four-year, $58 million contract. He started nine games in Pittsburgh, throwing two interceptions and one touchdown, so the question is what percent of his previous salary will he draw on the open market? Pittsburgh’s new coach means Dugger doesn’t have an obvious landing spot, making this a low-risk rebounding signing.

prophecy: signed with commander

Dugger is still a solid player, but the Patriots have moved on from him. Some of it is cost, some of it is because he’s not the player he once was. He remains a solid addition in short-term trades. He just wasn’t a headliner. Still, he can help commanders.

73. Trayvon Diggs, CB, free agent

The 27-year-old Diggs is a wild card on this list, two years away from making $19 million a year, but he was cut by the Cowboys and Packers at the end of last season. He has an 11-interception season on his resume, but not a single pass defended in all of 2025. For a team that doesn’t have to rely on him as an every corner, he’s worth a shot, but what kind of contract would that result in? Spotrac acquired him for $7.5 million, which still seems like a hefty investment for a proven deal.

prophecy: signed with commander

This is not going to go smoothly. Yes, head coach Dan Quinn had his best three years as a pro while coaching Diggs in Dallas. However, over the past few years, he hasn’t been the same player, which is why Dallas cut him at the end of the season. The Packers quickly realized that Diggs’ best days were behind him. If the Commanders sign him, it should be as a backup and recycling project, not as a starter. Frankly, Diggs is not a player Washington should be targeting after a terrible 5-12 season.

Can you imagine what would happen if the generals ignored the defensive line and pass catchers in free agency? Fans are understandably angry. Washington must have at least one defensive line starter, a tight end and/or a wide receiver in free agency. Yes, the GMs need more help, too, but the number of draft picks is limited, so Peters’ work isn’t done yet.
