Real Madrid have been linked with a summer move for the heart of Manchester City’s midfield as Rodri begins to return to top form. Still, it’s difficult to see Rodri completing his move to the Bernabeu.

A new report from James Marshment for TeamTalk claims that Real Madrid have made Rodri one of their priority signings next summer. Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schloterbach has been named as another transfer target for Real Madrid, according to TeamTalk. James Marshment’s report includes transfer expert Fabrizio Romano’s summary of Rodri’s future. Speaking about Real Madrid’s interest in signing Rodri, Romano explained: “Rodri’s contract expires in 2027 and he will face a big decision in the summer. He will decide whether to stay at Manchester City in the coming months. So thinking about signing a new contract or maybe – as far as I know, it’s not a financial decision – it’s also a personal decision about family and whether he wants to stay in Manchester. Or maybe consider the possibility of trying a new chapter. Of course, Rodri also has fans within Real Madrid. The Real Madrid management appreciates him.“

The thought of Rodri leaving Manchester City is not something anyone associated with Manchester City wants to entertain. Rodri has become one of the most important players in Guardiola’s team. Rodri comes to Manchester City as a midfielder and has the ability to become one of the best midfielders in the game. He has achieved that potential and more at Manchester City. Rodri won the Ballon d’Or with Manchester City and was an integral part of a successful era for the club. There is a strong argument to be made that Rodri is the most important player of Manchester City’s era of dominance. This is not a bold statement.
It’s hard to see Rodri leaving Manchester City for Real Madrid, even if Los Blancos rarely miss out on their targets. This does happen though, as evidenced by Erling Haaland rejecting Real Madrid in favor of joining Manchester City. What makes Rodri’s move to Real Madrid more difficult is Real Madrid’s previous moves. The La Liga giants rejected Rodri’s Ballon d’Or award in 2024. The Spanish giants believe Vinicius Junior deserves the award. They were unable to attend the awards ceremony. This can only be interpreted as disrespect for Rodri, despite Real Madrid’s statement saying otherwise. It’s hard to watch a player and person like Rodri forget that on a night so special to his career.

Real Madrid have reportedly set their sights on Rodri. Perhaps Rodri’s future is one to watch now. That remains to be seen, but the best hope is for Rodri to sign a new contract with Manchester City, thus ending any chance of Real Madrid acquiring City’s stalwart player.
