Naughty Dog and Sony just can’t let The Last of Us go. Following last year’s remaster of The Last of Us Part II, the developer has now released a new update for the remaster, rearranging the game chronologically to provide a more linear narrative experience. Sony on Tuesday announced and launched a free update for the PS5 and PC versions of The Last of Us Part II: Remastered.
“The Last of Us Part II” Remastered New Update
Dubbed The Last of Us Part II Remastered Chronological Experience, the update allows players to experience the game in chronological order. The Last of Us Part 2 initially featured a non-linear narrative that jumped between stories told by Ellie and Abby over several days, and featured key flashbacks that added context.
“With the new Chronological Mode, we believe players will gain a deeper understanding of Part II’s narrative,” Naughty Dog said in a post on the PlayStation Blog on Tuesday. “For example, players will be able to see how Ellie’s gift of a guitar is so neatly integrated into her learning to play, while the journey through Seattle will show fascinating parallels between Ellie and Abby’s criss-crossing journeys. You’ll see how close they come to each other, how their actions influence each other, and more.”
In addition to the default game mode, this update will add a chronological mode to the game. The downloadable update is now available as patch 2.1.0 on PS5 and patch 1.5 on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. In addition to Time Mode, the update also fixes bugs and improves the game’s performance.
As part of the update, Nuaghty Dog is also introducing new rewards, including a new PlayStation trophy for completing the game in chronological mode, and two new Uncharted 4 skins for Joel and Tommy in the game’s roguelike survival mode No Return.
Sony and Naughty Dog have been returning to The Last of Us since the series was adapted into a hit HBO series in 2023 starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. In April this year, the developer released The Last of Us Complete Edition, offering a single package of The Last of Us Part 1 and Part 2 remasters on PS5. The full version of the game launches just days before the second season of The Last of Us series begins.
