The Boston Red Sox are heading into one of their most important offseasons in a while and they need to start making some moves. They have brought in Sonny Gray as a starter. Now it’s time to get a true No. 2 starter and lighten their outfield load.

With a glut of young superstar outfielders, the oldest outfielder in Jarren Duran appears to be on the way to a trade. Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer believes that if the Red Sox want to trade Duran, they could team up with the Kansas City Royals to acquire All-Star and Cy Young candidate Cole Ruggans.

The transaction looks like this:

Red Sox get: Cole Ruggans

Royals get: Jalen Duran

“Any Royals outfielder has to be able to cover a lot of grass at Kauffman Stadium, but that won’t be a problem for Duran. He’s not the best baserunner, but he has excellent reaction time and plenty of closing speed. The appeal of Ragans for Boston will be to get a potential No. 1-B player to pair with their No. 1-A, Garrett Crochet. Ragans in 2024 He finished fourth in AL Cy Young Award voting and fanned 98 batters in 61.2 innings even in a down season this year,” Reimer wrote.

Ragans struggled with injuries last season, going 3-3 with a 4.67 ERA, 98 Ks and a 1.184 WHIP in 61 innings pitched. However, in the 2024 season, he was named an All-Star and finished fourth with the American League Young. He posted an 11-9 record, 3.14 ERA, 223 Ks, and 1.143 WHIP in 186 innings pitched.

If this is what the Red Sox are getting for Lagann, then this is indeed a good deal. After working with pitching coach Andrew Bailey, he could even get better and really fill the second spot for the Red Sox. Hopefully they can get to work and see how the negotiations go.
