Before No. 7 Texas A&M (11-2, 7-1 SEC) hosts No. 10 Miami (10-2) in the first round of the College Football Playoff on Saturday afternoon, head coach Mike Elko revealed Monday that second-year offensive coordinator Colin Klein, who was hired as Kansas State’s next head coach earlier this month, will be replaced by current JOC and WR head coach Hallmon Wiggins.
This isn’t a shocking development to those paying attention, as Wiggins’ background as a trusted assistant head coach and WR coach under former Alabama head coach Nick Saban includes developing several current NFL wide receivers. Meanwhile, his two seasons playing alongside Klein have made him an expert on Elko’s offense against starting quarterback Marcel Reed under center.
“I think he’s very smart. I think he’s very smart. I think he’s got a great offensive mind. He’s obviously played a big role in the offense we’ve had so far.
“He’s spent a lot of time under some really good offensive coordinators throughout his career, and I think the way he sees the game is very compatible with the way we want our offense to be. I think it makes a lot of sense.”
With this promotion, Wiggins will have the opportunity to build a trusted staff of assistants around him, which, according to a recent report from Football Scoop, could include Brad Cornelson, whom Wiggins worked with as wide receivers coach during his time at Memphis (2012-2018), while Cornelson coached quarterbacks and gained experience as an offensive coordinator since then.
“Conelson then served as Sam Houston’s offensive coordinator in the 2023-24 season and led the Bearkats to a 2024 New Orleans Bowl victory over Georgia Southern after KC Keeler took over Temple. He served as the head coach at Enid High School in Oklahoma during the 2025 season.”
Conelson checks all the boxes as a Power 4 assistant and provides another trusted voice for Wiggins in his first season as Texas A&M’s primary play-caller.
