Mario Edwards Jr. played his final game with the Houston Texans.
The Texans waived Edwards one year after his two-year contract expired due to a medical failure, according to the league’s trade wire. The veteran defensive tackle has been dealing with a torn pectoral muscle that landed him on injured reserve for half the season.
Edwards played in every game for the Texans last season before getting injured, making 13 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 tackles for loss and 4 quarterback hits. He was outstanding in the second half of the 2024 season for Houston, recording 31 tackles, three sacks, eight quarterback hits and three tackles for loss on the way to the Class B title.

There are rumors that a move is on the table, although it’s also possible that Houston will trade the defensive tackle before the new league year. Instead, the Texans will save $4.41 million in cap space in 2026 while potentially returning to the market to target another defensive tackle now.
Houston did find a player to bolster the defensive line, signing Buccaneers defensive lineman Logan Hall to a two-year contract. The Texans also re-signed veteran Sheldon Rankins to a two-year contract worth more than $12 million.
