Terrell Williams to make Super Bowl trip despite cancer battle

New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said defensive coordinator Terrell Williams will travel with the team to Santa Clara for the Super Bowl.

Williams is staying on the team as much as possible this season because he is undergoing treatment for prostate cancer.

“He’s doing a great job,” Vrabel said. “He’s excited to travel with us and I appreciate you asking. It’s been great so we’re delighted to have him.”

Williams’ arrival is good news for players on the roster — even those on offense who don’t work directly with the defensive coordinator.

“Another road warrior. We have a lot of love and respect for Coach T and his strength,” wide receiver Stefon Diggs said. “It’s admirable. Everything he’s been through. Even when we see him around the building, everyone is smiling. Everyone yells at him.

“He definitely has some moments that he shares with everybody. But it’s another road warrior for you guys.”

Linebackers coach Zach Kuhl took over play-calling duties in Williams’ absence. Over the past three weeks, Kuhl and the defense have helped lead the Patriots’ defense to the Super Bowl as they allowed under 9.0 points per game while improving blitzing and coverage.

“The defensive staff does a really good job of collaborating and there’s a really good process and connection here to bring everyone’s thoughts together and also help Zach when we talk about the game plan and what we want to do and ideas,” Vrabel said.

“Everyone was very willing to share those thoughts, and I think it was very positive and helpful to Zach. But Zach did a great job and I’ve said it many times, I know he’s going to be ready to help us win.”
