Tennessee softball ties best start for a season all time

No. 1 Tennessee (24-0, 3-0 SEC) defeated Austin Peay (16-9), 9-1, 9-1 on Tuesday in the Mid-Central Classic at Ridley Sports Center in Columbia, Tenn.

Tennessee has its best start to a season in program history (2006). On March 24, 1996, the Lady Vols defeated Austin Peay 20-0 in the softball series.

Erin Nouvel (11-0) started and pitched four innings for the Lady Vols. She struck out three and struck out 55 pitches (34 strikeouts) with 15 batters. Nouvel allowed two hits, one run (earned) and zero walks.

Maddi Rutan also pitched two innings of relief for Tennessee. She had two strikeouts and 36 pitches, including 24 strikeouts, against seven batters.

Tennessee’s offense totaled nine hits, including home runs by Markkenzi Butt and Alanna Leach.

The Lady Vols are ranked No. 1 in the NFCA/GoRout Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll for the fourth straight week.
