Teacher mourned after a prank gone wrong

A beloved Hall County teacher has died and four teenagers are facing charges after a prank.

Earlier Saturday afternoon, the school held a memorial service for Jason Hughes

Students stopped to lay flowers at a growing memorial outside the school.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office said they received a call to North Gate Drive near the Gates in Green Hill around 11:30 Friday night.

They said Jaden Wallace, Elijah Owens, Aiden Hakes, Ariana Cruz and Anna Katherine Luke went to put toilet paper on the Hughes’ tree.

The Sheriff’s Office said Hughes came out of the home and tried to stop them. At this moment, a group of people got into two cars and left.

They said Wallace was driving a pickup truck when Hughes tripped and fell on the road. Then Wallace ran over him.

Wallace and other teenagers tried to help Hughes, but he died in hospital a short time later.

Wallace is currently charged with vehicular homicide, reckless driving, as well as littering and trespassing.

Four others were also charged with littering and trespassing.

Channel 2 Action News The school provided a statement that read in part: “Our hearts are broken. Jason Hughes was a loving husband, a devoted father, a passionate teacher, mentor and coach who was loved and respected by his students and colleagues. He gave so much to so many people in so many ways.”

Rogers interviewed one of Hughes’ former students about how he recalled one of his favorite teachers.
