T20 World Cup: No penalty or sanction for BCB, says ICC

The International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a media release that it has had constructive and open dialogue with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on issues including the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and the wider development of cricket in South Asia.

In particular, the discussion acknowledged the disappointment over Bangladesh’s absence from the T20 World Cup while reaffirming the BCB’s status as an important and full member of the ICC. The global governing body highlighted Bangladesh’s rich cricketing heritage and its key role in growing the sport, highlighting the country’s vibrant fan base of more than 200 million supporters. The International Cricket Council has also made it clear that the absence of the national team will not have any long-term impact on Bangladesh cricket.

The main outcomes of the discussion include:

BCB has no penalty: The ICC confirmed that Bangladesh will not face any financial, sporting or administrative sanctions for missing the T20 World Cup. If desired, BCB also reserves the right to contact the Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC) in accordance with ICC regulations. The ICC reaffirms its commitment to neutrality and impartiality, focusing on facilitation rather than punishment.

International ICC events 2028-2031 will be held: As part of the deal, Bangladesh has been confirmed to host an ICC event ahead of the 2031 Men’s Cricket World Cup, subject to ICC standard hosting requirements. The decision reflects confidence in Bangladesh’s ability to host international events and demonstrates the ICC’s commitment to allocating hosting opportunities among its member states.

ICC CEO Sanjog Gupta said: “Bangladesh’s absence from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is regrettable, but it does not change our commitment to the country as a core nation for cricket. We remain committed to sustainably growing the game in Bangladesh, creating opportunities for players and fans, and investing in its long-term competitiveness and global integration.”

The International Cricket Federation, PCB and BCB and other member committees reaffirm their commitment to dialogue, cooperation and constructive engagement, emphasizing the importance of unity and integrity within the global cricket community.
