THOUSAND PALMES — A motorist who may have been speeding on a Thousand Palms road lost control of his SUV Thursday, causing the vehicle to overturn and roll over, injuring the driver.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at 1:55 p.m. Thursday on westbound Varner Road, between Monterey Avenue and the Boca Chica Trail, parallel to Interstate 10.
The agency said witnesses observed the SUV traveling at a high rate of speed and may have rolled at least once before coming to rest on its wheels before the vehicle left the westbound shoulder and overturned in desert brush.
No other vehicles were involved.
Riverside County Fire Department paramedics arrived on scene within minutes and found the motorist, who has not been identified, with minor injuries, according to the CHP.
The victim was apparently the only passenger in the SUV. He was taken to Coachella Valley Hospital for treatment.
A tow truck with a 60-foot cable was called to retrieve the damaged SUV.
No road closures required.
