Ismael on new signing Cashin and injury updates

Blackburn Rovers boss Valerian Ismail says new winter signing Eran Cousin “checks all the boxes” as the club looks to strengthen an injured squad.

Cashin joined Rangers on loan from Brighton until the end of the season on Tuesday to help shore up the defence, with fellow defenders Hayden Carter, Matty Litherland and Scott Walton on the sidelines, leaving the team with few centre-back options.

Ismail told BBC Radio Lancashire: “Obviously we wanted a left-footed centre-back with some experience, a player who had already played in that shape and then his name came on the table.”

“Having spoken to him, we’re convinced he’s the right player for us. It will bring some experience, some leadership – which will be good for the team – and certainly some quality building.”

“We need to be ready to help our players immediately and not wait two or three weeks to be ready. A player who has the ambition to prove he is good – he meets all the conditions we are looking for.”

Ismail also confirmed goalkeeper Balazs Toth could make his first start against Hull City in the FA Cup on Sunday (14:30 GMT) after returning from a knee injury.

Forward Andriy Gudjohnsen and midfielders Ryoya Morishita and Adam Forshaw are back on the pitch but will not return to the squad for several weeks, while Carter is also training with the squad but will need to be assessed before returning.

Winger Ryan Hedges will undergo surgery on Monday for an ankle injury, but a timetable for his return has not yet been determined.
