That ended his 19-year run as Pittsburgh’s lead, and now the team is looking for someone else to fill a similar role.
Multiple candidates are vying for the prestigious position. From Brian Flores to Chris Shula. Amid those conversations, the Steelers requested an interview with the San Francisco 49ers coordinator.
Steelers request interview with 49ers defensive coordinator Clay Kubiak

Kubiak, 37, is one of three sons of Super Bowl-winning head coach Gary Kubiak.

The offensive coordinator has been with the 49ers for five seasons. In his first season with the team (2021), Kubiak served as the team’s defensive quality control coach and was subsequently promoted to assistant quarterback coach for two seasons (2022-2023).
In 2024, he will be the offensive passing specialist that season and then become the 49ers’ offensive coordinator for the 2025 season.
With serious injuries to players like Brock Purdy, Brandon Aiyuk and others, Kubiak helped lead San Francisco to a top-10 team in total yards per game (351.4) and points per game (25.7), while ranking in the top five in passing yards per game (244.5).
The Steelers are the first team in the NFL to be interested in hiring Clay Kubiak as an NFL head coach.
