Souttar commits future to Rangers

Scotland defender John Souttar has signed a new contract with Rangers, keeping him at the Ibrox club until May 2027.

The 29-year-old’s previous contract expires at the end of the season but he has committed to stay for at least one more season, with Rangers having the option to extend for a further year.

After graduating from Dundee United’s academy, Souttar spent more than six years at Hearts before moving to Glasgow in the summer of 2022.

He won the Scottish League Cup in 2023-24 and played a key role in helping Danny Rohr’s side win the Scottish Premiership title this season.

Rangers beat Tynecastle 4-2 on Sunday and are two points behind league leaders Hearts.

“It’s an exciting time to be here and an exciting time to be involved in the club, so I’m delighted,” Souttar said after putting pen to paper.

“I understand the position I’m in, what an honor it is to play here, the demands here, and I’m personally very happy and excited to know that my future is here.”

Rohr, whose side are on a 12-game unbeaten run in domestic competition, described Souttar as one of the key figures in the side.

“We are delighted that John has agreed this new contract with the club,” said the Germany coach.

“Retaining our best players and leaders is important to future success and having a Scot in the squad will also be key.

“It’s great news for everyone at the club and there’s a lot to look forward to between now and the end of the season and for John, hopefully the World Cup will come at the end of the season.”
