Gulfport, already the largest city in South Mississippi, could be adding more land for a large-scale retail project.
Due to Mardi Gras, the City Council’s regular meeting has been postponed to Thursday, February 19th at 11am. The City Council is expected to discuss the proposal to annex the property on Route 49.
U.S. 49 near Mississippi State Route 53 is currently in Harrison County, but the new owner agreed to be amicably taken over by the city, Mayor Hugh Keating said.

The property that formerly belonged to Gulfport Memorial Hospital has been sold to Walmart and will become a Walmart Supercenter, he said.
Walmart currently has a supermarket on U.S. 49 south of Interstate 10 and a Neighborhood Market north of Interstate 10. This is believed to exclude these stores.
The annexation area will be within the current corporate limits of the city in Lehman area. Site work has begun.
