South Korea wins gold in women’s 3,000-meter relay in short track speedskating

MILAN (AP) — South Korea defeated Italy on Wednesday to win the women’s 3,000-meter relay and win its first gold medal in short track speed skating at the Cortina Olympics in Milan.

The team of Minjeong Choi, Gilli Kimm, Sukhee Shim and Dohee Noh won the championship with a time of 4 minutes, 4.014 seconds, beating the Italian and Canadian teams. Cui was part of the team that won the silver medal in Beijing four years ago.

Still, it was Italy’s Arianna Fontana’s 14th Olympic medal in her sixth Winter Games, breaking fencer Edoardo Mangiarotti’s record for most Olympic medals by an Italian athlete – a record that had stood since 1960.

Fontana is already the most decorated short track speed skater of all time.

Things were disappointing for the Dutch team, with one rider falling with 16 laps to go. South Korea was slowed by the crash, but still had enough distance for the team to recover.

Jens van ‘t Wout, who has won two men’s events so far, is aiming to make it three in the 500m, with large crowds of orange-clad Dutch fans likely to be cheering soon.
