Huff arrives at Southern Mississippi after enduring one of the strangest circumstances of the 2024 coaching cycle. He coached the final season of his contract at Marshall a season ago and left for free at the end of the season, even though Marshall was in the midst of one of the best seasons in the history of top college football. Marshall went 10-3 and defeated Louisiana State in the Sun Belt Championship Game.
In the final weeks of the season, it became clear that Huff’s future was not at Marshall, and he went to fellow Sun Belt school Southern Mississippi, and many players followed suit. The Thunder were fined $100,000 by the Sunbelt after opting out of the Independence Bowl due to a lack of players.
Under Huff’s leadership, Southern Miss’ performance immediately turned around. After going 1-11 in 2024 under coaches Will Hall and Reed Stringer, the Golden Eagles are 7-5 in 2025 and preparing to make their second bowl game of the 2020s. Meanwhile, Marshall led 5-7.

Huff’s career record as a head coach is 39-25. He compiled a 32-20 record at Marshall in his four seasons at the school, leading the Thunder to a bowl game berth. Prior to becoming the head coach at Marshall, Huff served as the associate head coach and running backs coach at the University of Alabama and also served as an assistant coach at Mississippi State and Penn State.
In Memphis, he takes over a program with one of the best resources in Conference USA. The Tigers went 8-4 in 2025 after winning a combined 21 games in the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
