Softball freshman dies in Kentucky after collapsing during tryouts

A Kentucky community is mourning the death of Russell County High School freshman Braylee Northcutt, who district officials confirmed died after collapsing during a softball tryout on Monday, the Louisville Courier-Journal’s Stephanie Kuzdeem reports.

Principal Michael Ford said Northcutt suffered a “medical emergency” shortly after selection began and the school activated its crisis response plan. In a message to the family, Ford expressed his condolences to “Bliley’s family, friends, classmates and the entire Lakers family.”

According to the Kentucky Athletic Trainers Association, Russell County High School does not employ certified athletic trainers. Northcutt is the fourth Kentucky high school athlete to collapse and die on school property in less than six years, joining athletes Matthew Mangion Jr., Andrew Dodson and Wes Phillippe.

She was the first female high school athlete in the state to collapse and die during a school sporting event, according to The Courier Journal’s Safe Side Investigations.
