Snow, freezing rain to hit parts of upstate Saturday night

ALBANY – Parts of upstate New York will be under a winter weather warning Saturday night as an approaching storm threatens to make roads slippery.

Earlier Saturday, the National Weather Service issued a winter weather warning that will be in effect from 5 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday for parts of the north, including northern Saratoga and Fulton counties and the southern Adirondacks. Mixed precipitation is expected in the area, with snow and sleet accumulations totaling up to 2 inches and ice accumulations around two-tenths of an inch.

Joe Villani, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Albany, said most of the Capital Region will experience mostly rain Saturday night, with some rain expected around 6 or 7 p.m. Villani said areas north of Saratoga Springs could experience sleet and freezing rain that would turn to rain overnight.

“If you’re heading into Glens Falls, you’re more likely to get sleet and freezing rain tonight because the cold air tends to stay in the area longer,” Villani said. “When you get into higher terrain, like in northwest Saratoga County, where there’s a significant increase in elevation, this is really a time.”

Villani said those traveling north of Saratoga Springs should “use caution” as roads can be slippery due to possible ice.

“Really slow down, watch your speed and how long you stop, leave enough time and distance between vehicles so you can always come to a gradual stop because if you slam on the brakes, you’re going to slide right through any type of ice that’s around you,” Villani said. “The good news is, in the Capital Region, we’re expecting some light rain.”

Villani said conditions will improve in most areas by Sunday morning, but for areas northwest of the Capital District, snow showers could linger late Sunday afternoon into the evening. Villani said less than an inch of snow is expected in the Mohawk Valley and 1 to 3 inches in the western Adirondacks.
