After strong winds over the weekend, western North Carolina is heading into a cold week.
In the Asheville area, the low temperature this week is expected to be 12 degrees on Thursday night, January 15. Precipitation is expected across western North Carolina due to the Northwest Drift Snow event, and cold temperatures may cause hazards on roadways. Dangerous wind chills are also a possibility, according to the National Weather Service.

At 8:56 a.m. Monday, January 12, the weather service issued a hazardous weather outlook for Avery, Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Swain, Haywood, Buncombe, Graham and Northern Jackson counties.
The forecast warns of severe weather from Tuesday, January 13 to Sunday, January 18, with drifting snow in the northwest. The federal weather service said the event appears “increasingly likely” to affect the North Carolina mountains, specifically from the evening of Wednesday, January 14, through Thursday, January 15.
The National Weather Service predicts maximum snow accumulation above 3,500 feet near the Tennessee border. Gusty winds and dangerous wind chills are possible in the northern mountains Thursday evening, January 15, into Friday morning, January 16.
The weather forecast shows a chance of rain and snow in Asheville Wednesday night, Jan. 14, from midnight to 3 a.m. Snow is still possible after 3 a.m., and the overnight low is expected to be about 23 degrees, cold enough for snow to accumulate. There is still a 30% chance of snow before 9am on Thursday, January 15, with a daytime high of around 29 degrees.

Friday, January 16 – Sunny, with a maximum temperature near 40 degrees. It will be sunny and cloudy at night, with the lowest temperature around 21 degrees.
