Slott’s frustration boils over as Liverpool lose to Manchester City
Liverpool left the Etihad Stadium with more than just defeat on their hands. Arne Slott was visibly angry after his side’s 2-1 loss to Manchester City, with his anger centered not just on the performance but also on what he saw as refereeing inconsistencies that affected the game’s decisive moments.

City recovered from Dominik Szoboszlai’s superb opener through Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland’s penalty to complete the comeback to keep their title pursuit alive. For Liverpool, however, the narrative of the game is inseparable from the controversy.
Referee decision sparks controversy
Slaughter’s postgame comments quickly turned to the referees. With the game tied at 0-0, the flashpoint came when Mohamed Salah’s shot seemed to be pulled back by Marc Guehi. No red card was subsequently shown. Szoboszlai was later sent off for denying Haaland a clear scoring chance in much the same way.
Asked about the decisions, Slott said: “When you ask me what decision, I guess what do you mean… Manchester City’s goal that was disallowed (at the start of the season)? The penalty they got away against us?

“The clear red card (foul) on Mo Salah in the second half? Or the penalty they got in the second half, or do you mean the decision on Szoboszlai (the red card)?

“It’s just two more games and people who follow Liverpool know how many decisions I make in all the other games as well and all the big decisions can become 50-50 in some situations.”
His frustration stems from perceived inconsistencies, not the law itself.
“I can accept the fact – even though I don’t like it – that the referee followed the rule book and Dominic fouled Haaland in this situation, which was obviously a pull and he got the shot off so he could have scored. It was a red card.

“If you follow the rule book, you will see that Guehi has a clear advantage over Salah, who has scored 100 times in eight years.
“Isn’t this a red card? Then I was even more frustrated… These are the rules and following the rules is all I ask.”
Pressure on title race intensifies
While Slott battles the referee’s displeasure, Guardiola is firmly focused on reaching the pinnacle of the Premier League. The victory narrowed the gap between Manchester City and Arsenal to six points and strengthened the confidence of those in the defending champions’ camp.
Guardiola said: “In my experience, thirteen games is a lot of time.
“All we can do is keep our eyes on Arsenal and (continue) there, try to take advantage of it if they fall asleep, if they (make a mistake).

“I have a feeling that just improving a little bit is not enough to compete with Arsenal, but we still have room to improve. We have to play at home (against them) and of course we have to beat them.”
Team concerns ahead of Sunderland trip
The immediate challenge for Liverpool now turns to availability. Szoboszlai’s suspension leaves a key midfielder without a key midfielder, while Joe Gomez and Jeremy Frimpong are not expected to return against Sunderland.
For Slott, the night encapsulated the wider tensions throughout Liverpool’s season, the razor-thin margins, the big consequences and the growing realization that key decisions at crucial moments were wrong.
